East West College is a professional school. Students, faculty, and staff are expected to maintain high standards of professional behavior, as defined below. Any student who fails to adhere to these standards will be placed on academic probation or suspended from the college.
Respect
Because East West College attracts a diverse student body and staff, all students, faculty, and staff are expected to respect individual differences and beliefs. This means maintaining sensitivity for the feelings and ideas of all others on campus. Verbal or physical abuse by students, faculty or staff is not allowed.
Confidentiality
Personal information revealed in any East West College classes or meetings is confidential.
Drugs, Alcohol, Weapons
No student, staff, or faculty member may be present on campus or participate in out-of-class assignments under the influence of illegal drugs or alcohol. Possession of weapons, illegal drugs, or alcohol on campus is also not permitted. Smoking in campus buildings is also not permitted.
Honesty
Theft, giving false information on college forms, plagiarism, cheating, or any other form of dishonesty is not permitted.
Class Disruption
Students are not permitted to engage in any activity that disrupts a class. This includes talking or making other noises during presentations by the instructor or other students, sleeping in class, leaving class without instructor permission, making inappropriate comments or performing unacceptable actions toward other class members, and any other activity that the instructor feels is disruptive.
Harassment
Any conduct or speech critical of a person's sex, race, religion, national origin, age, sexual orientation, handicap, or disabling condition is considered harassment. Verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature on campus or in the context of assignments associated with East West College is considered sexual harassment. Harassment, including verbal or physical threats, by any member of the East West College community, either on campus or during any activity associated with East West College course assignments, is not permitted and may result in disciplinary action up to and including expulsion from the College.
Professional Dress Code
In accordance with accepted standards in health care professions as well as Oregon law, students are required to wear clean, neat and professional-appearing clothing while on campus or performing out-of-class assignments off campus. The only exceptions involve acceptable dress for palpation practice during East West College courses. These are described in the course syllabi.
Personal Hygiene and Cleanliness
Students are expected to maintain personal cleanliness appropriate to the profession of massage therapy. This includes, but is not limited to: keeping the hair and body clean and free of excessive cosmetics, fragrance, and body odors; keeping the fingernails short; and wearing clothing that is clean, neat, and modest. For health reasons, students may not attend class in bare feet.
Sale or Endorsement of Products
No member of the East West College community may sell, promote, or endorse any product or service while on campus or during any college-related assignment. Products may, however, be sold at the bookstore by contractual arrangement.
False Representation
No student who is not a Licensed Massage Technician (L.M.T.) in the State of Oregon may represent him/herself as a massage therapist or bodyworker by using the title "massage student," "bodyworker" or any other words that imply s/he has a license to practice massage.
Rules and Regulations
All rules and regulations published in this Website, the Student Handbook, College Catalog or on official bulletin boards shall be followed.
Draping During Massage Practice
Draping is the process of using sheets, towels and other linens to help a client stay warm and maintain a sense of modesty during the massage. By using effective draping techniques, the massage therapist maintains a professional and ethical practice and helps the client feel safe, warm and secure. Only that part of the body being massaged is uncovered. Any form of nudity on campus or during off-campus EWC assignments is strictly forbidden. Nudity is defined as a state of dress that exposes any personal body parts such as breasts, genitals and/or the gluteal cleft. Students performing massage on or off campus must be fully clothed.
